Three tips for winter wellness

With Hobart’s winter inevitably back in full swing – the snow taking residence on top of Mount Wellington and MONA’s winter feast complete, it’s time to reevaluate your winter health and make sure you are doing all the right things to take care of yourself this winter.

At Leap Health Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centres, we believe it is really important to take care of both our physical and mental health year round. However, it is important to remember some extra attention may be required in the winter months. Here are a few simple and easy tips to help you stay in top condition this winter…

  • Drink your water – The colder months are drying in a number of ways and we are all guilty of not consuming as much water as our bodies actually require. Generally, the intake of caffeine and other hot drinks increases whilst our water intake decreases with the colder weather. Your body needs to be well hydrated in order to stay efficient and perform at its optimal level. Increased energy, maintained regularity and prevention of sprains and cramps are just a few of the benefits of a good water intake. So, set up a challenge to drink more water with your colleagues, your family or friends (or all of them) in order to stay motivated and awake this winter.
  • Listen to your body – We all get early warning signs when we are about to come down with a cold or flu like sickness. For some it may be a tickle in the throat, a mild stomachache, nausea or simply that gut feeling of something just simply not being right. In order to get a kick-start in saying goodbye to sickness, it’s important to boost your immune system. Taking a good multivitamin can boost your immunity and act as a preventative measure against sickness. Make sure you do your research, the brand is reputable, and has good bio-availability (the proportion of the vitamin that enters circulation when introduced into the body, which enables effectiveness). As a hot tip – most supermarket vitamins do not meet this requirement.
  • Treat yourself – It is really important to look after yourself and make sure you are treating yourself with the kindness you deserve. Massages are important but are also an effective way of taking care of yourself and your body. Massage therapy can be a great way to help you get through the winter season. The benefit here is not just in getting you out of the cold for an hour and into a nice warm treatment room but also in boosting your circulation and even your immune system.
